Friends,

I’m always looking for ammunition designs that offer a reasonable improvement for certain uses. In this case, for self-defense against humans. 

We are utilizing the Lehigh Defense 170 gr. Controlled Fracture design. This bullet’s nose will fracture into three petals upon impact with living mammalian materials. The bullet base will continue to penetrate as a solid with a slight jagged mushroom on the nose. The petals will tumble and penetrate roughly seven inches, creating three additional wound channels. This will increase blood loss and give horrific impact wounding. I would not want to be the surgeon trying to clean up and repair such a wound. The bullet base or shank will penetrate 16 +/- inches. 

My goal was to push this 170 gr. Pre-fragmented copper bullet to 1,150 fps out of 5-inch barrels and keep the load at “standard pressure”, which is non +P. As you can see from my real-world test pistols below, I was able to accomplish this. These bullets will still fracture the nose at impact velocities below 850 fps on living mammalian tissue. This design will allow for sufficient penetration to reach human vitals, even at bad angles on large men. The impact of wounding is, as already stated, “horrific”. 

This load is operating at standard pressure, so it is safe to use in ANY/ALL firearms factory-chambered for 45 acp. Always test for cycling reliability and point of impact, BEFORE relying on any gun/ammo combination for serious use. 

I will carry two of these cartridges, one in the chamber and the other first in the magazine, followed by a magazine full of non-expanding solids. I do this because if your threat is still alive after you’ve fired two shots, there is a likelihood he will get behind cover, and I want solids for dealing with the potential of defeating soft cover.

Cycling was 100% in all test pistols. Accuracy was good to excellent in all test pistols. 

This is deadly self-defense ammo for grave emergency extremes.
