I am always looking for ammo designs that offer an advantage for certain uses—in this case, for stopping two-legged threats. 

This Lehigh Defense Controlled Fracture bullet will shed its three petals after about an inch of penetration into living mammalian materials. Those three petals will tumble and make their own paths of destruction for roughly seven inches. The bullet shank will continue to penetrate like a solid with a slightly expanded/jagged front end, for roughly 16 more inches. The concept behind this bullet is to increase blood loss substantially, without sacrificing penetration needed to destroy whatever else is deeper in its path. I would hate to be the surgeon who has to repair a human torso or leg/arm, hit with one of these. 

This is “tactical” ammo designed for one purpose, and that is to kill humans, fast. As such, we wanted true magnum power, but not much recoil or muzzle flash, to facilitate fast follow-up shots. So, while this should be considered full-power 357 Magnum ammo, it is not the barn-burning, turbo-charged stuff we make for outdoor use on wild animals. 

Below are velocities from various test guns in my test battery. 

>  1,242 fps - S&W model 640, all steel, 1 7/8-inch
>  1,290 fps - S&W mod 66, Lew Horton 3-inch
>  1,331 fps - S&W mod 27, Coolest N frame ever made, 3.5-inch
>  1,333 fps - Ruger GP 100, 4-inch
>  1,386 fps - Ruger 1960 Flat Top, coolest revolver Ruger ever made, 4.7-inch
>  1,412 fps - S&W mod 27, 6.5-inch 

You’ll note how fast the little 1 7/8 inch model 640 is shooting. This is largely because of the scant barrel-cylinder gap of .003 inch. Normally, I would expect 40-50 fps less velocity out of this barrel length, if barrel length were the only factor in producing velocity, which it is not. Also note how slow the 4-inch GP 100 is. It has a huge barrel-cylinder gap of .010 inch. That barrel should be producing 40 fps more than it is if barrel length were the only factor in generating velocity.  

Let's face it, any full-power 357 Mag loading is hard on humans. This load was created to give you low recoil and low flash, thus a fast follow-up capability, and be deadly to soft-skinned humans. Generally, the petals will not fracture in clothing, but require moisture content of living flesh to mushroom and then fracture, so these bullets penetrate clothing BEFORE they fracture. 

Also note that I did not list any test guns with scandium/aluminum J frames or cylinders. I have shot this ammo through them, however, with no ill effects except a very numb hand that throbs after the numbness wears off. I advise AGAINST using this load in the scandium revolvers in order to avoid crimp jump under the severe recoil. “CRIMP JUMP” or “BULLET CREEP”. If you would like to use this type of bullet in your scandium/aluminum revolvers, I advise using our 38 spl+P load, which is made with the same bullet, which recoils noticeably less.
