ITEM 45-90 - 350 TSX-FN

For decades, I’ve been asked to create some modern, very powerful 45-90 ammunition, and here it is. This load features our 350 gr. TSX-FN bullet, designed for expansion as a typical solid copper Barnes TSX, but with a huge hollow nose to imitate a flat nose profile, for use in magazine tubes.  This is the same bullet we use in our 45-70, item # 8G ammunition, but at 225 fps more velocity due to the longer (45-70 = 2.105-inch VS 45-90 = 2.400-inch) case of the 45-90 and its therefore greater powder capacity. This bullet achieves a full 2350+ fps from my several Winchester model 86s with 22-to-26-inch barrels.

The 45-90 cartridge is so much longer than the 45-70, that it requires the longer 1886 action. The Marlin 1895 45-70 action will not cycle a cartridge this long. 

Velocities of the full power (+P) 45-90 ammunition are exactly midway between the hottest 45-70 loads and the hottest 458 Win. Mag. loads with like bullet weights. Any time you can gain over 200 fps, more velocity with a 350-gr. bullet, it is a substantial gain.

We are making several other 45-90 +P and “Black Powder Equivalent” loads.

This 350-gr. Mono-metal expanding bullet is the load I would use on any game weighing up to 1,700 lbs. Even at 45-70 velocities, I have witnessed this bullet kill many elk-sized animals and exit.  At 225+ fps faster velocity in the 45-90+P, it will do the same thing, but with even deeper penetration and greater impact. Some typically constructed jacketed bullets may not stand up to close-range impact shots at these velocities, but the Barnes TSX will mushroom beautifully on mammalian material. The bullet cannot over-mushroom or dissolve at any shoulder-held rifle velocities. So you will get the flatter trajectory of the lighter 350 gr. bullet, but still gets great expansion and deep penetration. This bullet is great for any game from deer-sized critters to AK/Yukon big bull Moose. I would use this bullet on animals as small as the African Leopard and Lion, and on animals as large as the giant grizzly, and even the Cape Buffalo. It is the one load that does it all on everything, but Africa's biggest game, like Hippo, Rhino, or Elephant.

This bullet nose profile cycles 100% in all my new Miroku 1886s, but will not cycle in my 1906-made 1886.

If you are going to fire this +P ammo in 100+ year old Winchesters, it is acceptable to do so provided your rifle has a proper steel barrel. Read this article on aging your rifle, so you can be safe in doing so.

There is no need to destroy old relics and hurt yourself in the process by firing high-pressure ammo in metal barrels designed for low-pressure black powder. The pressure of this +P 45-90 ammo (all of our 45-90 +P loads) is running roughly 38K PSI and is 100% safe to use in the Model 1886 and all of its clones that I know of.
