For decades, I’ve been asked to create some modern, very powerful 45-90 ammunition, and here it is. This load features a Spitzer, 350 gr. TSX is designed for expansion and semi-deep penetration. This is the same bullet we use in our 45-70, item # 8P ammunition, but at 275 fps more velocity due to the longer (45-70 = 2.105 VS 45-90 = 2.400 inch) case of the 45-90 and its therefore greater powder capacity. This bullet achieves a full 2,400+ fps from my several Winchester model 86s with 22 to 24-inch barrels, as you can see below. This was done by hand-feeding the cartridges directly into the chambers on these 1886s. These spitzer-shaped bullets should never be loaded into ANY magazine tube for fear of a resulting magazine tube detonation. 

This ammunition is made specifically for falling-block, single-shot actions made of steel for firing smokeless powder ammunition.  Under no circumstances should this ammunition be put in ANY magazine tube of a repeating rifle, EVER! 

Velocities of the full-power (+P) 45-90 ammunition are about midway between the hottest 45-70 loads and the hottest 458 Win. Mag. loads with like bullet weights.  

If you plan to fire this +P ammo in 100+ year-old Winchesters, it is acceptable to do so provided your rifle has a proper steel barrel. Read this article on aging your rifle, so you can be safe in doing so.

THE DANGERS OF NOT AGING YOUR FIREARM VERSUS THE ADVENT OF“HIGH-PRESSURE STEEL” FOR USE WITH SMOKELESS POWDER

There is no need to destroy old relics and hurt yourself in the process by firing high-pressure ammo in metal barrels designed for low-pressure black powder. The pressure of this +P 45-90 ammo (all of our 45-90 +P loads) is running roughly 38K PSI and is 100% safe to use in the modern model 1886 and all of it’s clones that I know of, assuming single-shot firing via loading ammo directly into the chamber by hand. Also, in falling block single shots of proper metallurgy. 

While our +P 45-70 loads are plenty powerful for the world's biggest bears and for Cape Buffalo, this new 45-90+P ammo is even more so, if you are using the proper bullet/load.

I do not have a modern Sharps or Ruger #1 falling block rifle chambered in 45-90, so I velocity-tested these loads in two different Winchester model 1886s by hand inserting the cartridge directly into the chamber and closing the bolt/lever.  UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD THESE CARTRIDGES EVER BE PLACED IN A MAGAZINE TUBE,  unless you like explosions in your hands and face.
