Friends, over the decades, one of the most asked questions by customers has been “what ammo will cycle in a lever action”? The problem with this question is that those customers do not understand firearms well enough to know that not all “lever actions” are the same, not even close. For example, the Marlin 1894 will cycle ammunition longer than any 1892 action, and the Winchester 1894 will cycle ammunition that is longer yet than the Marlin 1894. Never mind, we have some newcomers like the S&W 1854 and the Henry. I am therefore putting together some “Lever gun” loads for 44 magnum and 45 Colt, that will cycle in all of them. From now on, when a customer asks about 44 mag. or 45 Colt ammo that will cycle in a lever action, I will simply refer that customer to the “Lever Gun” loads, instead of taking 30 minutes to explain the differences in lever action models, which the customer will probably forget in five minutes anyway, unless they are in the minority that understand various lever action firearms. I should have thought of making “Lever Gun” loads decades ago! 

In an effort to avoid people conflating almost anything, the above applies only to 44 mag. and 45 Colt, not 357 mag. All of our 357 mag. loads will cycle in any lever-action rifle I’ve ever seen, which is pretty much all of them. 

This first “Lever Gun” load features a hardened core, jacketed 265-gr. bullet that will expand on living mammalian material at carbine velocities, but it will not expand much and will therefore penetrate deeply enough to be used on elk, moose, or very large bears. 

At 265 grs., this bullet is also light enough to stabilize in the millions of Marlin 1894s that used a slow rate of twist of 1/38. This load will function and give great accuracy in any lever-action model made. The new Ruger made Marlin 1894 44 mag. rifles feature a 1/20 twist and will stabilize bullets well over 300 grs. 

All Lever Gun loads are also short enough to cycle through the old and new Ruger semi-auto carbines and well as the Ruger lever action. 

There is no reason not to shoot these loads in revolvers too, if you want to use ammo that is interchangeable in your revolver and your rifle. We are using the same powders and the same pressures in these “Lever Gun” loads as we are in our regular, made for revolvers, 44 mag. loads, but these lever gun loads are short enough in the overall length (OAL) to cycle through all lever action firearms….which means they will fit all revolvers chambered in 44 magnum too. These loads are not recommended in scandium or aluminum cylinders, as you will get sticky extraction of the fired casings, and the felt recoil is severe.
