ITEM 45-90 - 400 BPE

The original 45-90, loaded with black powder, featured 400 +/- gr. bullets @ 1,300 fps. We are duplicating black powder pressures with smokeless powders to create black powder equivalent loads, but with clean-burning smokeless powder……and generally with a slight velocity increase over “black”. This particular load uses a soft JFN bullet that will expand on living mammalian material down to an impact speed of about 1,000 fps. As you can see, it is generating nearly 1,400 fps out of our 24-inch test rifle. This bullet will expand perfectly at impact speeds 1,400 fps (point blank range). We do not use this bullet in our full-power 45-90 or 45-70 loads, as it will over-expand or blow apart at impact speeds exceeding 1,700 fps on living mammalian material. This is a good deer through moose bullet at this velocity. 

Generated recoil is low with this load. Even using traditional steel butt plates on my 45-90 rifles, the felt recoil is very light. You can shoot these all day long and enjoy each pull of the trigger. 

The 45-90 cartridge is so much longer than the 45-70, that it requires the longer 1886 action. The Marlin 1895 45-70 action will not cycle a cartridge this long.  

 If you are going to fire this ammo in 100+ year old Winchesters, it is fine to do if your rifle has a proper steel barrel. Read this article on aging your rifle, so you can be safe in so doing.

THE DANGERS OF NOT AGING YOUR FIREARM VERSUS THE ADVENT OF“ HIGH-PRESSURE STEEL” FOR USE WITH SMOKELESS POWDER

There is no need to destroy old relics and hurt yourself in the process by firing high-pressure ammo in metal barrels designed for low-pressure black powder. Over the internet, I cannot tell how safe your antique rifle is with any ammo. You are responsible for making that determination.

NOTE: In our 1906 manufacture model 1886, this load is too long to cycle. However, in our newly made Winchester Miroku 1886’s, this load cycles and feeds perfectly. So, obviously, Winchester has made changes in the internal dimensions since 115 years ago.
