ITEM 45-90 - 500 JFN +P

For decades I’ve been asked to create some modern very powerful 45-90 ammunition, and here it is. This load features a modified 500 gr. Jacketed, lead alloy-based, Hornady bullet designed to operate in the 458 Win. Mag. cartridge. This bullet is therefore stiff as it was designed to mushroom and yet hold together at impact velocities as high as 2,150 FPS, so at our 45-90 velocity of 1,850+ fps, this bullet mushrooms, but does not over-mushroom, and penetrates deeply. I would shoot any of the giant bears with this load, as I would Cape Buffalo. The 45-70, with our +P loads will push this bullet at 1,625 fps to 1,650 fps but at 225 fps more velocity due to the longer (45-70 = 2.105 VS 45-90 = 2.400 inch) case of the 45-90 and its therefore greater powder capacity, this load is quite powerful, and is the load I would use if I was looking for a deep penetrating expanding bullet.

All of the current 400 gr. to 450 gr. Expanding lead-based .458 bullets will come apart if you were to shoot live mammals at the muzzle velocities the 45-90 can produce. As we get to it, we will develop some lighter expanding bullets (less than 500 grs.) with mono-metal TSX-type designs, as they will hold together well at these impact speeds, for those of you who desire lighter expanding bullets. This bullet achieves a full 1,850+ fps from my several Winchester model 86s with 22 to 26-inch barrels.

The 45-90 cartridge is so much longer than the 45-70, that it requires the longer 1886 action. The Marlin 1895 45-70 action will not cycle a cartridge this long. 

Velocities of the full power (+P) 45-90 ammunition are exactly midway between the hottest 45-70 loads and the hottest 458 Win. Mag. loads with like bullet weights. Any time you can gain over 200+ fps, more velocity with a 500 bullet, it is a substantial gain. 

We will be making several other 45-90 +P and “Black Powder Equivalent” loads. We will also be coming out with a 350 gr. TSX spitzer load, for single shots. This will be a 2350+ fps load. 

If you plan to fire this +P ammo in 100+ year old Winchesters, it is acceptable to do so provided your rifle has a proper steel barrel. Read this article on aging your rifle, so you can be safe in doing so.

THE DANGERS OF NOT AGING YOUR FIREARM VERSUS THE ADVENT OF“HIGH-PRESSURE STEEL” FOR USE WITH SMOKELESS POWDER

There is no need to destroy old relics and hurt yourself in the process by firing high-pressure ammo in metal barrels designed for low-pressure black powder. The pressure of this +P 45-90 ammo (all of our 45-90 +P loads) is running roughly 38K PSI and is 100% safe to use in the Model 1886 and all of its clones that I know of. 

While our +P 45-70 loads are plenty powerful for the world’s biggest bears and for Cape Buffalo, this new 45-90+P ammo is even more so, if you are using the proper bullet/load.
