Friends, we are releasing two new 338 Federal loads. This is a superb short-action cartridge for many types of North American big-game hunting. All cartridge choices will involve trade-offs, depending on your intended use. If you want to shoot big game at over 300 yards, the 338 Federal will be a bad choice, but range limitations are about the only way I can fault this super useful cartridge. Many folks never have the need to shoot over 300 yards for their type of hunting.

The limited muzzle velocity means you do not need “bonded” or “partitioned” or anything “premium” in terms of hunting bullets. Standard Cup/core bullets work really well. This 225 gr. Hornady Interlock bullet is a bullet I have used on elk when loaded into the 338 Win. Mag. Even at Win Mag. velocities of 2,800 fps, the bullet still holds together but does get a bigger mushroom than I like for deep penetration, but at 2450 fps, this is not an issue, and thus, this bullet works very well terminally on elk when fired from the 338 Federal case at 2450 fps. This is the 338 Federal load I would use for elk and moose or interior grizzly and other animals of that size range. It is a better-balanced cartridge than its cousin, the 358 Winchester, shooting slightly flatter and retaining energy better.

I have killed several train cars of big game and can tell you that bullet diameter matters, so while your 308 Winchester (which uses the same case as the 338 Federal) may be good out to 400 yards for use on some big game, the 308 will not crush big game under 300 yards, like the 338 Federal will. If you want decisive killing on North American big game at ranges under 300 yards, on a short light action, you will not be disappointed with the 338 Federal and our ammo.
