Friends, it is hard for me to know where to begin in describing our 416 Rigby loads and why we make them the way we do, for this most used (by me in Africa) and beloved cartridge, as I have much to say, that has been learned by actual use, not by reading what others have said. If properly loaded (big “if”) with modern bullet designs, this is the most balanced and deadly cartridge for a wide range of uses in Africa. It hits hard up close, but shoots flat way out there, with correct ammunition. We are making four different loads for the 416 Rigby. Two softs and two solids. In describing these loads and their virtues, bear with me as I elaborate on the uses of this cartridge. All of these loads are super low pressure and fall within modern industry SAAMI pressure specs for the 416 Rigby. Modern powders and modern bullets are a beautiful thing we should be taking advantage of, so I do.

The first two loads, are somewhat traditional in terms of bullet weights and velocity. However the bullet designs are much more effective than the original bullets this cartridge was designed around 113 years ago, as of this writing. (04-24) The “soft” is a Barnes 400 gr. TSX all copper bullet. (item # 416 Rigby 400 TSX) In 416 caliber, I simply cannot find a better expanding bullet than the modern TSX. I’ve tried. There are a few as good, but nothing better. We are moving this bullet at 2,400 fps out of 22 inch barrels. I’ve killed several buffalo with it at all ranges out to 200 yards and it is simply a winner. I am 100% satisfied with how it kills Cape Buffalo. In fact, unlike the 375 H&H with 300 gr. bullets, the 416 is a good “stopper” on buffalo if you should be charged by a bullet proof Cape Buffalo. While I prefer bigger bullet diameters (like .505 and up) as pure stoppers, the 416’s work and are worlds ahead of anything 375 and shoot as flat.

Our other 400 gr. bullet load is a solid all brass flat nose bullet by Cutting Edge Bullets. We load it at 2,400 fps out of 22 inch barrels. (Item # 416 Rigby 400 CEB) This bullet cannot be deformed on any living mammalian tissue, even at close range on the biggest of bones. In flesh, this flat nosed bullet makes a hole about double it’s diameter (that’s .83 inch) and penetrates very straight, which equates to deep penetration. This is the bullet to use on hippo, rhino, elephant or buffalo, if you prefer solids for buffalo. It will penetrate buffalo lengthwise. The CEB solid, all brass construction bullet, uses a design that is super low pressure, yet superbly accurate.

These next two loads are not historically typical, but I have never been good at thinking inside someone else’s box of 113 years ago, although other ammo makers do it by reflex, which really is not “thinking”. These next two loads are my first choice for African hunting when plains game and dangerous game are both sought on the same hunt, without having to resight your rifle. They utilize 350 gr. bullets.

First is a “Soft”. (Item # 416 Rigby 350 TSX) It features a 350 gr. Barnes TSX at between 2,615 fps to 2,650 fps out of 22-inch barrels. The flat trajectory allows me to shoot Springbok out to 300 yards and take Cape Buffalo at closer ranges without changing loads or resighting. I’ve used this load to kill 30-40 head of Plains game and then turn around and kill Cape Buffalo without resighting the rifle. I killed leopard and lion with this load (one shot each) even though everybody and their cousin says TSX bullets are too stiff for hunting big cats. I see this load as more versatile than the 400 gr. loads due to its flat trajectory, but wait a minute, everyone knows 400 gr. bullets in 416 caliber, penetrate deeper and are therefore more desirable, right? Wrong! That 350 gr. TSX upsets beautifully on small plains game and still penetrates plenty deep for use on Cape Buffalo for shot angles you’d want to use any 400 gr. soft on. In fact, the 350 gr. TSX will out-penetrate most typical 400 gr. Softs, but shoot much flatter and recoil less. This 350 gr. 416 Rigby load is shooting faster and flatter than the venerable 375 H&H with 300 gr. bullets.

The second 350 gr. load features a solid (Item # 416 Rigby 350 CEB) all brass, flat nose solid, Cutting Edge Bullet, which has all the virtues of it’s 400 gr. brother. We are loading it at 2600 to 2650 fps out of 22 inch barrels. It penetrates deeply and can be used on critters the size of elephant with no worries about lack of penetration, but has the flat trajectory and lower recoil of a faster moving 350 gr. bullet.

The 416 Rigby cartridge has voluminous case capacity and this allows us to load it at super low pressures when compared to the 416 Remington, but pressures are not the issue, as most writers and thinkers (spare me please) want to discuss. The issue is that low pressures equate to a less ear splitting report when fired. I have a hard time bringing ear protection into play while hunting, when often split second action is required and fumbling around with hearing protection causes you to miss the window of opportunity…..so I generally hunt/shoot with no ear protection. These full power 416 Rigby loads are much easier on my ears than equal loads from the 416 Remington of like barrel lengths, which operate at ear splitting pressures.

Below, please see my real world velocities, from my real world rifles, not laboratory test barrels, with item # 416 Rigby 350 TSX.

Rifles

> 2,607 fps - Hartmann & Wiess, 24-inch barrel
> 2,620 fps - Verney Corron, 22-inch barrel
> 2,637 fps - CZ 550, 22-inch barrel
> 2,659 fps - Mauser Diplomat, 22-inch barrel

You’ll note that the only 24-inch barrel in the group of test rifles had the slowest velocity. This is not a typo and it could benefit you if you read this article about Barrel Length Versus Velocity." Rifles # 2, 3, and 4 all came with 26-inch barrels, which I cut and crowned to 22 inches.

Please enjoy and trust these incredible 416 Rigby loads. Have fun, be safe and God bless.
