405 WINCHESTER

After many years of customer requests, here are the cat's whiskers in 405 Winchester ammunition.

Item # 405 Win -300 SP features a 300 gr. jacketed spitzer expanding bullet at 2,370 fps out of my two test rifles. This bullet is hyper-accurate out of both rifles, which you can see below. I would not hesitate to shoot animals up to a good 800-1,000 lbs. with chest shots with this load. FDR shot numerous African lions with this load, but ours is a lot more modern in terms of bullet design and propellant, making them more powerful and effective than what FDR used.

Our next upcoming 405 Winchester load will be a 350 gr. +/- hard cast, flat nose, gas-checked bullet at around 2,150 fps. +/-. (item # 405 win. 350 GC) This will be a very hard bullet and will give sufficient penetration to hunt Cape Buffalo with a soft 300 gr. in the chamber and the magazine full of 350 gr. Hard cast bullet, I would take on the world's largest bears or moose with this ammunition.

Friends, be mindful of the age/condition of your rifle. A lot of these 1895 Winchester models are well over 100 years old. BY itself, this antiquity means little, but when firearms get this old, more than just their age can come into play. Unknown history, such as whether the rifle has been abused over the decades. In fact, just how much has this rifle been fired and with what ammo?......., etc. etc. Metal fatigue is invisible to the naked eye but happens in the real world. All I am saying is to be mindful of the worthy firing condition of your rifle, especially when shooting antiques. There are tons of “hack” gunsmiths out there, but if you know of a competent one, (there are lots of those too) have your rifle checked before firing if you question its condition.
