BUFFALO BORE 7MM-08 AMMUNITION
7mm-08 - 140 BT (140 gr Ballistic Tip 2,850 fps/ME 2,525 ft-lbs)
ITEM 7mm-08 - 140 BT
Friends, for many years, we’ve been planning to bring out some very good 7MM-08 Remington loads, and now that the COVID farce is behind us, here they are.
For those who like short-action rifles, the 7MM-08 is super useful for North American big game (excepting the very large coastal grizzlies of AK) out to 400 yards. All of my children started hunting big game at around age 12, with the 7MM-08 cartridge in a short-barreled (20 inches) and short-stocked (12.25-inch LOP) custom-made rifle based on the model 7 Remington action. The recoil is light, and the cartridge is powerful enough for animals through bull elk, providing proper shot placement and bullet construction.
We are making two different 7mm-08 loads. First, we are using the 140 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet, at 2,800 to 2,950 FPS, which is a great bullet in terms of accuracy and terminal performance at these velocities. Finding bullets with good terminal performance at these velocities is fairly easy. In contrast, the 7MM Remington Magnum pushes bullets so fast that premium bullets must be used to keep bullets from rupturing on impact with living flesh and bone. This bullet at a muzzle velocity of 2,800 to 2950 fps, is a stellar performer terminally and shows great accuracy in my three test rifles.
Our other upcoming 7MM-08 load will feature 140 gr. TSX bullets at roughly the same velocities. This bullet is for those who want extra penetration for elk-sized animals shot at bad angles. I have rarely shot older bull elk standing broadside in a meadow, like all the pictures you see in elk hunting articles. Most of my older/larger bulls were taken with bad-angle shots in timber because that is what the old boys offered. I find 800 lb. bull elk to be harder to kill than 1,700 lb. AK/Yukon bull moose, and as such, I would not hesitate to shoot bull moose with this bullet, provided I took only double lung or CNS shots. The 7-08 is not my choice of cartridge to hunt the giant AK coastal grizzlies with, no matter the bullet used.
> 2,801 fps - Custom (Rem. model 7 action), 20-inch barrel
> 2,853 fps - Custom (Rem. model 7 action), 20-inch barrel
> 2,905 fps - Rebarreled Kimber model 84M, 21.5-inch barrel
You’ll note that I like short barrels on my lightweight rifles, and there’s no doubt that some 24-inch barrels will reach 3,000 fps with these loads.
For the deer/sheep/goat hunter who likes lightweight, short-action rifles, the 7MM-08 cartridge is the cat's whiskers, and it can be pressed into service hunting larger critters.
Good hunting, be safe, and God bless,
Tim Sundles
