BUFFALO BORE 270 WINCHESTER AMMUNITION

Friends, I bought my first 270 when I was 16 or 17. (49 years ago) It was a Weatherby Vanguard. It had a strong liking for Sierra boat tail bullets. Mostly, I killed crows, coyotes, and squirrels with it, but I did kill some deer and some elk with it and other 270s over the years. I have strong opinions, based on experience, about the capabilities of the venerable 270 Winchester. I do not see it as a great elk cartridge, although I have killed elk with it. I see it as one of the best choices for the hunter that kills animals in the Mule Deer (mule deer can get over 300 lbs. in the Rockies), Dall Sheep, or Mt. Goat size. It is certainly capable of killing larger animals. I once had a friend who shot and killed an elk with a 22 WMR with one shot……..just because it can be done does not make the 22 WMR a good elk cartridge. The 270 Winchester, in my opinion, is a marginal elk cartridge, and even then, only if the ammo is purpose-designed. If a good 270 Winchester were the only rifle I had, I’d kill elk with it every year, assuming proper ammo, but since I have many rifles, it’s not my first choice for elk or moose-sized critters. I believe the 270 Win. is so popular because deer-sized animals are what most folks hunt, but with proper ammo, the 270 Win. can kill much larger animals, and it does that with little recoil, which most hunters really appreciate.

I will describe each 270 load we make in this introduction. I will discuss its virtues, weaknesses, and the purpose for which it was designed. This document may get a little wordy, as I have much to say regarding this useful cartridge. You’ll be getting more information, not less.

Item # 270 Win. 130 TTSX is the 270 load I would use for heavier game like elk, simply because the mono metal TTSX bullet penetrates deeply in mammalian tissue. Probably deeper than a typical 150 gr. premium partitioned or bonded bullet, yet you get the higher velocity and flatter trajectory of the light 130 gr. bullet. You can certainly use this bullet on smaller game like deer, as it works great on them, but you simply do not need this much penetration on deer-sized animals unless you are shooting them diagonally or lengthwise. If you want one load for bigger animals like moose/elk/interior grizzly and still hunt deer without having to resight your rifle to another load, this is the one load that does anything a 270 ought to be doing.

Item # 270 Win. 130 spitzer, utilizes a 130 gr. Hornady cup/core bullet. I have shot or seen shot, numerous game animals with this bullet loaded to 3,100 fps at a variety of ranges from very close to 400 yards. Even at close range on dense-bodied Black Wildebeest, this bullet holds together and will penetrate all the way through on broadside shots. I took some friends Black Wildebeest hunting and they shot five Wildebeest using this bullet in their hand loads, three bullets penetrated deeply enough to exit and two stopped under the hide on the off-side. This is the perfect bullet construction for the 270 velocities, and it is all from a traditional (non-“premium”) affordable bullet. Our adult wildebeest weigh 300-350 lbs. and are dense/thick through the shoulders. For the animals I hunt with a 270, this bullet does what I want done on critters that don’t weigh over 400 lbs.

Notice the below test rifles and corresponding velocities with item # 270 - Win. 130 TTSX.

Rifles

3,053 FPS - Winchester circa 1982, 22-inch barrel
3,116 FPS - High Tech Custom, 1988, 22-inch barrel
3,072 FPS - Remington model 700, 22-inch barrel
3,062 FPS - Howa, 22-inch barrel

Please note that all these rifles feature 22-inch barrels, and they would likely gain another 100 FPS in typical 24-inch barrels.

Please enjoy these 270 Win. loads and be safe.

God bless,

Tim Sundles
