ITEM 500J - 570 SOLID

My favorite African cartridge for hunting dangerous game is the 500 Jeffery. With proper ammunition, it is simply a magnificent killer. While “stopping” a charge is much different than hunting, the 500 Jeffery is one of the better stoppers, too, but there are slightly more decisive cartridges for that. We are making two loads, a 570 gr. CEB solid and a 570 gr. soft, the Hammer Bullets, Shock Hammer. I run these bullets at around 2,150 FPS in 20 and 21-inch barrels. This is the same velocity that the 500 NE produces from 24-inch barrels. The 500 Jeffery cartridge is capable of more velocity in a good Mauser 98 style action, but why do that as the 500 Jeffery loaded with these bullets at these velocities in a good magazine rifle is as good as it gets for hunting African dangerous game. The typically longer, harder to maneuver, 24 to 26-inch barrels on many African magazine rifles will obviously gain an additional 100-200 fps. Longer barrels have some advantages, but portability in thick cover or deploying in a split second is not among them.

The CEB solid brass flat nose is the best-designed solid I have ever seen, regardless of caliber. It penetrates straight and makes a hole about double its caliber in living tissue. By design, it is easy on barrels and generates little pressure, fouls little, and is quite accurate. Today's bullet designs are as good as it is going to get until we start hunting with laser beams or choosing the settings on our “phaser.”

The Hammer bullets, Shock Hammer, is one of this new generation of so-called “softs” that is mono-metal and designed to shed its mushroomed petals, which travel on to make four more paths of terminal destruction while the shank continues to penetrate deeply like a sold. Tissue disruption is huge for the first 14-20 inches; then, you get a couple more feet of shank penetration. I’ve used this bullet on Cape Buffalo and a lot of smaller species and highly recommend it. On smaller species, it will destroy a lot of meat, so pick your shots accordingly. To be fair, CEB and Lehigh Defense make similar versions of this style of “soft” mono-metal bullet that work well too.

Note my real-world velocities from real-world rifles below.

CZ 550

 CZ 550 shortened to a 21-inch barrel - 2,170 fps

This ammunition was designed by me, as are all Buffalo Bore loads. I killed around 20 hard-bossed, Irritable Cape Buffalo bulls with 500 Jeffery loads over the course of a couple of years of hunting/testing in Africa. These loads work!

Good hunting, stay safe, and God bless,

Tim Sundles
