This new load is designed to fill dual roles. As a 416 caliber, it is obviously large enough for true Dangerous Game hunting and stopping, but with its high BC and high muzzle velocity, it will also perform big game hunting tasks out to 300+ yards if you know the distance of your target, muzzle velocity, and the bullets exterior ballistics.

For decades this was the role the venerable 375 H&H filled both in Africa and in Alaska. However, the 416 being four calibers bigger in diameter and utilizing a much heavier bullet, is simply a better stopper for those close-range emergencies. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better combination cartridge for hunting in AK, combined with the chore of stopping an aggressive grizzly or a wounded grizzly that is fleeing. This cartridge, in terms of “stopping” ability, is a class above the best 375 H&H load. 

The TSX 350 gr. bullet will penetrate on par with most lead-based, premium, controlled expansion, 400 gr. bullets. So, you get the lighter recoil, faster velocity, flatter shooting qualities of this 350-gr. mono-metal expanding bullet, but the penetration of much heavier 400 gr. expanding bullets. If I were hunting Africa, I’d have no problem shooting Cape Buffalo with this load, backed up by a magazine full of our non-expanding 350 gr. flat-nosed solid loads. In AK, for use on large bear and moose, I’d not use the solids but would fill my rifle only with these TSX expanding loads.

We were able to engineer this load to be full power +, but not to exceed factory (SAAMI) pressure limits. You’ll note that my test gun, which was made to my specs almost 30 years ago, only has a 20-inch barrel as I designed this rifle to be more of a guiding and handy take everywhere rifle than a hunting rifle. Depending on barrel internals, longer barrels will probably give higher velocities…….this is a good place to read my article on “Velocity Versus Barrel Length.”

Dangerous Game ammo is best designed to be lower pressure to ensure that unfavorable conditions (such as hiking in a rainstorm in AK and getting rainwater in your barrel, etc.) will not raise pressure enough to hinder the reliability of proper cartridge and rifle function. Cartridge pressure can be your enemy, so keep it low as possible without affecting velocity, which is all about proper powder and bullet selection.

My test rifle, with its shortish 20-inch barrel, showed very good accuracy and gave an average velocity of 2,619 fps.
