“DANGEROUS GAME” HEAVY 45 Colt +P Mono-Metal
300 gr. Mono-Metal WFN @ 1,300 fps / ME 1,101 ft lbs
20 Round Box
ITEM 3DG 300
At the time of this writing (02-19) I’ve long wanted to introduce a line of mono-metal, non-expanding, dangerous game loads for our large handgun and 45-70 offerings. These new “Dangerous Game” (DG) loads are super high quality, very powerful, and will live up to their namesake.
“MONO-METAL” BULLETS
Mono-metal bullets have a few advantages (a couple of disadvantages too) over typical non-expanding hard cast bullets. These advantages may or may not be meaningful to each individual, depending on your usage. The advantages are that they are cleaner burning/firing than hard cast bullets. Also, hard cast bullets can smear their nose profile when they hit large bones at close range/high velocity. When the flat nose smears and changes shape, it can impact straight line penetration. The disadvantages are cost and case capacity issues……..mono-metal bullets made of copper or brass alloys are lightweight for their length. As an example, the 380 gr.
Below you can see the firearms I used to obtain velocities. We use real world firearms, not laboratory test barrels that give false high velocities.
➤ 1,309 fps -- Freedom Arms model 83, 454 Casull, 6-inch barrel
➤ 1,275 fps -- Ruger Large Frame Vaquero, 5.5-inch barrel
➤ 1,260 fps -- Bowen/Large Frame Ruger conversion (1957 manufacture), 4.75-inch
➤ 1,480 fps -- Marlin 1894, 20-inch barrel
In order to avoid assumptions, (Gee, that never happens in the shooting industry!) I’m clarifying……….With most of our other +P 45 colt loads, NORMALLY when firing from a carbine, we will see a velocity gain of 400+ fps increase over the typical 6 inch revolver, but with these Dangerous Game loads, we use a faster-burning propellant that does not take the same advantage of the longer carbine barrel, so we are gaining only around 200 fps over revolver velocities, not the normal 400+ fps we see with shorter lead-based bullets that allow for slower-burning powders due to the greater case capacity that shorter bullets allow.
This Dangerous Game 45 Colt +P load will be effective on larger animals up to the 2,500 lb. range, but as always, bullet placement is paramount.
These Heavy .45 Colt +P loads are NOT intended for the New Model Vaquero (small frame).
Use only in the following firearms:
1. All Ruger large frame revolvers chambered in 45 Colt or 454 Casull, (never use +P ammo in the small frame New Model Vaquero—these revolvers were made from late 2005 and on—do not use in the New Model small frame Flat Top Ruger or ANY small frame Ruger). Please read the following linked technical article to know more about Ruger revolvers and 45 Colt +P ammo.
2. These loads are safe in all modern Model 1892 lever guns as well as all Winchester & Marlin 1894's. Please read the following linked technical article to know more about 1892s and all variants or copies of the 1892.
3. All Winchester and Marlin 1894 models.
4. Any break-open action such as the T/C or Handi Rifle.
5. Any falling block action such as the Sharps or Winchester 1895.
6. Any Freedom Arms model 83.
