45-70 Magnum - Lever Gun Ammo
500 gr. FMJ-FN
@ 1,625 fps/M.E.2,931 ft lbs
20 Round Box

Our 45-70 ammunition is externally identical to SAAMI spec 45-70 ammo, but internally it generates FAR more power and pressure. So, our 45-70 ammo will fit into ANY 45-70 firearm but is not safe in every 45-70 firearm.

Its use should be limited to the following firearms:

All Marlin 1895 (1895 Marlins are all model 336 actions, chambered in 45-70) iterations made since 1972, all Browning 1885 and 1886 copies, Rossi Rio Grande, New England Arms Handi Rifle, T/C Encore, ALL falling block actions made of modern steel such as Ruger #1 and #3, Shiloh, Christian and Pedersoli Sharps, Henry Lever Action Rifles, all Winchester 1886 iterations made since 1915, CVA Centerfire Rifles and all Siamese Mauser bolt actions.

Never use this ammo in ANY original or reproduced "Trap Door" action as the design is far too weak.

We use only factory stock firearms in recording published velocities, so you get true, actual field velocities with our ammo -- not exaggerated long laboratory test barrel velocities.

Many a Grizzly Bear, Cape Buffalo, Bison and other dangerous game have fallen to our 45-70 loads since we began 45-70 production 1999. Below is an idea of what type of game these loads were designed for.

Item 8A -- for game where 5 to 6 feet of straight line non-expanded penetration is needed.

Item 8B -- the bullet utilized expands to an inch or more in diameter at our velocities and hence penetration is limited to about two feet in flesh and bone. This is the single most effective hog and black bear load ever devised in 45-70. I don't use it on animals weighing more than 800 lbs as it won't give adequate penetration at bad angles for animals larger than 800 lbs. If you'll limit yourself to broadside (double lung) and CNS hits, this load will work on 2,000 lb animals.

Item 8C -- The bullet we utilize in this load is very tough and gives only a small to moderately sized mushroom (about .60 cal) and because of the smallish mushroom, it penetrates very deep -- about 4 feet in muscles and bone and as such is a great bullet for use on dangerous game and on smaller game too as it does expand some. This load is the most versatile of our 45-70 loads.

Item 8D -- This bullet is a solid and won't mushroom and thus will penetrate 5 to 6 feet in muscle and bone.

Item 8E -- the bullet utilized in this load will expand radically and will penetrate only about 18 to 24 inches in muscle and bone and was designed for use on animals weighing no more than 400 lbs. At 2350 fps it is very fast and flat shooting. (For a 45-70)

Item 8D - Exterior Ballistics Charts for several Muzzle Velocities

Muzzle Velocity @ 1800 fps for Item 8D

Muzzle Velocity @ 1700 fps for Item 8D

Muzzle Velocity @ 1600 fps for Item 8D

Muzzle Velocity @ 1500 fps for Item 8D

Muzzle Velocity @ 1400 fps for Item 8D

I purchased some of the 405's a few years back. Shoot them for fun because there is nothing I've seen in Iowa that would require anything this large. I gave a few to a friend warning him not to attempt a shot on a deer at less than 300 yards. or maybe not at all. Of course he had to take a buck at 50 yards. Entry wound was nothing special but the dummy blew the chest cavity out of the backside. Powerful load.

Just came by UPS and i haven't had a chance to fire yet but wanted to thank you for fast delivery and exceptional packaging. Product arrived in excellent shape and I am satisfied with my purchase. My shoulder may hate me later though.

Made a 200 yard shot on a cat squirrel in a large oak tree here in Louisiana. Just blew limb out from under him.force of impact knocked him ammo for cat squirrels.

Love to read the reviews here! I've tried the 405 grain in my Rossi Rio Grande and it has some serious take down power. The recoil was surprising at first, but you get used to it. I plan to carry 500 grain rounds with me in Montana Grizzly country and I hope never to use it, but better safe than sorry.

These things are as bad ass as they come , heard there was a bear on a property i hunt and went for a walk with my stainless rossi rio packed with these 500gr. Monsters just so happens it was deer season and a nice little 150 lb 6pt. Whitetail walked out shot it head on center of its chest that deer litterally did a backflip and and blew its asshole out like I stuck a 12 gauge down its throat full of buck shot. BAD ASS ROUND!!!!!!

3 August 2011 had to kill a grizzly for the first time in my years in Alaska.  Outside of Nome, upriver from Council. The grizzly had raided the fish camp.  Cleaned camp and cut back brush. Moved the fish drying racks next to the cabins, a light was above the rack and let both dogs out.  It came back, ignored the dogs and yelling.  Finally started to move away but then turned. It was not a young bear or an old one but a healthy average grizzly. Walked away by the river finally into the fog but right when it seemed it was going to leave for good it turned.  Shot it three times with a 300 WSM, chest, ribs and hind leg.  It was hard as I had cataract eye surgery on my right eye the week before so had to switch and shoot with my left eye, left handed and left shoulder. But it went fast into into the willow toward the cabins.

Just before dark so went in with a friend's 45-70 Marlin loaded with your 500 grain bullets.  One shot and the bear flipped over with a second just to be sure. At 20 yards for the first 45-70. The second was closer. I really like that bullet. Bear died 30 yards from the cabins. I had a hunting license and bear season opened 1 Aug so the hide is being tanned.

Thank you for making a bullet even better than you say. It went through 7 feet 8 inches of bear. Sad it happened glad your bullet worked so good.

PS:  The bear was measured later at 8 feet 8 inches.  Thank you again for making such a powerful round for a handy rifle.  Cannot say enough about watching that bear flip on his back with the shot.  A real relief after he seemed to almost ignore solid hits from the 300 WSM.  Especially in low light and space for one shot.
